When Thomas Paine, wrote, "These are the times that try men's souls,"  he was talking about the turmoil going on in the American colonies, at that time.  Many colonists were fighting for their freedom and independence from British rule.  Because of the courage and determination of those colonists and patriots they achieved their independence.  On July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed.  That signing, which formalized our independence, is what we celebrate today.

Though these are still "times that try men's souls," we in the United States enjoy "unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."  Millions of people, in many countries around the world, can't say that.  We are very lucky to be Americans.

Happy Independence Day !
